were applications which, as
chance directed, so thefarmer thought himself " lucky" when thetop-dressing succeeded. In our time, however, another and a better generation of agriculturists has arisen—men of Coach Diaper Bags Outlet scientific attainments—farmers who, combining practice with science, have employed other and more powerful top-dressings. They have brought into existence a new race of manufacturers—thepreparers of artificial fertilizers ; and these in their turn Coach Online Outlet have excited theinquiries of themerchant and thenavigator, by whose efforts there is a stream of manures, or of thematerials for their Coach Diaper Bags preparation, now constantly flowing towards England, from almost every sea. Whilst thefarmer is dwelling on this page, let him pause for a moment, and remember how many a bright sail now whitens thesurface of theocean, bringing riches to his soils—let him think of those gallant ships now rounding Cape Horn, loaded with theguano of theChincba Islands, thecubic petre of Chili ; Coach Outlet Online and whilst these are coming from theSouthern Ocean, let him not forget those which are bringing from Norway and other places thenative phosphate of lime, for themakers of that superphosphate which in a few weeks will beso extensively drilled with theturnip-seed. Amid all these excellent efforts to bring theriches of other lands on to thesoils of England, it may, I repeat, at this season beof some little use if we travel together over a few of theexperimental fields which have recently been devoted to theexamination of thepowers of these spring dressings.
Let us, then, first examine theexperiments of Coach Factory Outlet Online Sale thelate Philip Pusey upon a wheat field, before we travel northward, and examine, with some equally careful and laborious Coach Factory Scotch agriculturists, their trials upon wheat and upon grass land with thesame dressings.
Theexperiments of Pusey almost always had reference to thetesting of some asserted scientific principle, and his last reported researches are not an exception to therule. They are entitled, " Experiments on theElementary Principles of Manure, as applied to theGrowth of Wheat" {Jour. Roy. Ay. Soc.vol. xvi. p. 929)- Coach Factory Store He tells us that, having an experimental field of eight acres, which Coach Factory Outlet was exhausted by having produced five white crops in succession, it occurred to him that a most interesting use might bemade of it in theseparate application of Coach Factory Outlet Online those elements which are supposed to constitute conjointly theefficacy of farmyard dung, and separately to act as fertilizers of thesoil. These elements, according to thecommonlyreceived theory of agricultural science, Pusey comprised, to give his own words, under four heads, viz., "1. Nitrogenous substances; 2. Phosphorus; 3. Alkalis and principally potash; 4. That which constitutes thebulk of dung, thestrawy matter, or, in chemical language, carbon. Thenitrogenous matter employed in his trials

remunerative markets, in which, however
they have been Coach Factory Outlet Online Sale disappointed. Thepanic of the4th February produced its effect on this grain in an equal degree with all other descriptions, therates for foreign, English, and Irish oats being at once reduced Is. 6d. per qr., without much making way. To this reduction there was a full response throughout thecountry, with very little cheerfulness in trade, but rather, on thecontrary, a still further indication of decline. Thesecond Monday came, therefore, without theslightest rally, Coach Factory Store and another Coach Factory Outlet Online reduction of 6d. to Is. had to besubmitted to, before sales could beeffecteJ, though business was effected with more readiness and on a larger scale, those dealers who were low in stock beginning to entertain theconviction that prices Coach Factory Outlet had for a time, at least, reached their lowest point. Thepressure of this day's market was more especially on thelow qualities of Irish, which, being unsold theprevious week, were
coming on demurrage; factors, therefore, had no alternative but landing on consignees' account, or quitting at thebest prices of theday. Coach Factory These parcels being thus cleared, fresh arrivals of a similar Coach Diaper Bags Outlet description, by Coach Outlet Online thefollowing Friday, had recovered their proportionate value, with a more steady sale. On the18th there appeared a considerable falling off in thearrivals of English and foreign while theeasterly winds kept theIrish cargoes out at sea. On inferior sorts of thelatter there was, therefore, an improvement of 6d. per qr., though themoderate show of samples in general did not enable sellers to obtain theleast advance on other kinds. Thelast Monday brought thebest supply of foreign, there then arriving from theDanish Isles and Holland nearly 22,000 qrs. From theopen ness of theseason, theEnglish and Scotch were moderate; say 4,600 qrs., and Irish were still kept out. A general stagnation, however still prevailed ; and those parcels of low Irish which had not been quitted, not bearing comparison with thefresh arrivals of foreign, were again neglected, and to quit tbera it was again necessary to abate 6d. per qr. TheLondon supplies for February were —English and Scotch 25,000 qrs., Irish 16,000 qrs., foreign 40,500 qrs.; against, in Coach Online Outlet January, English and Scotch 30,000 qrs., Irish 26,000 qrs., foreign 57,000 qrs. Themildness of pait of theseason has brought several cargoes from theBaltic which had not been expected; and this, together with theprobabilities of peace, has kept thetrade in a dragging state; but we think thedepression has been excessive, and that, with even a favourable issue of thepresent negociations, prices can scarcely go much lower.
English beans have been plentiful enough for therequirements Coach Diaper Bags of thetrade, though somewhat less than during thepast month; but there was a heavy arrival of Egyptian at thecommencement, which

custom solicited. Theeffect of this panic
told very differently on thecountry, thegreater number Coach Diaper Bags Outlet of markets refusing to make a full response, among which was Coach Factory Store Liverpool; but others, taking example from themetropolis, exceeded it in thereduction—Louth, for instance, quoting thedecline that week as Coach Online Outlet greatas 9s. per qr., though 5s. was about theaverage. Thesecond Monday showed that with all thefears of Coach Outlet Online theprevious week theEnglish supplies Coach Factory Outlet Online Sale had been insignificant, 3,700 qrs. being thetotal sum, with only 4,300 from thecontinent. Confidence was consequently resumed, and prices became more fixed and firm. A reaction immediately ensued in those country markets which had been excessively depressed, and thedecline was in many cases recovered; but as opinionsvaried, and supplies were short or liberal, so prices ranged—Liverpool closing at Id. per 70lb8. improvement on American samples. On thethird Monday a further upward progress was made, supplies continuing moderate, all good samples obtaining an advance of Is. to 2s. per qr., though Kentish factors scarcely found so much improvement, and thecountry generally was slow in its Coach Factory Outlet response. Thelast Monday brought in but a heavy report, there being, with only an average supply, an inability to quit samples, unless at Coach Factory lower rates. To this Essex factors deeming it unnecessary to accede, most of their Coach Factory Outlet Online parcels were unsold; and though at theKentish stands there was a readiness to take Is. to 2s. less, they also were not
cleared. Fine foreign wheat has not undergone thesame decline, thebad condition of theEnglish making it in demand for mixing; so that through themonth thefall on such has scarcely exceeded 28. This has served to Coach Diaper Bags keep up theprice of town flour.
As respects theLondon supplies, theforeign have nearly doubled those of January, thedifference being traceable to thegreater quantities received from theUnited States and India; from theformer about 17,000 qrs. being reported, with 37,000 brls. of flour, and from thelatter 15,400 qrs.; showing, that should thewar with Russia long continue, theimmense colonial resources of GreatBritain would obtain such development, as greatly to relieve her from foreign dependence. On theother hand, thearrivals of native growth have been less, at therate of about 1,500 qrs. per week, with a falling-off in country flour at a still greater ratio, thelast week excepted.
Theaverage sales of thecountry have, however, shown only a small decrease, being kept up hitherto through both months of thepresent year at a weekly rate, in January, of 94,100, and in February of 92,000 qrs. Still, this very free consumption of a somewhat less than an average crop must have made a deep inroad into stocks; and every foreign source, as theseason progresses, is likely to bewell drained. Let ua hope that peace will be theissue of thepresent Conferences as

farmyards with untroughed buildings,
renders it necessary to consider thematter with reference to thehealth of our animals. Theheavy losses from disease prove that at present there are many points affecting thesanitary condition of our animals that require inquiry and amendment. Coach Factory I purpose stating my own experience and some other facts, in thehope that my brother agriculturists will communicate their views and practice on this important question.I say all-important, because I believe that when we get statistics of thenumber of all animala loat by disease on each farm, it will show a formidable sumtotal of deduction from thefarmers' profits. For many yeara I have kept my bullocks, sheep, and pigs on open boarded floors, and with complete success, never having in any instance had a complaint amongst them, although sometimes from 300 to 400 pigs, 200 sheep, and 30 to 50 bullocks have been placed in close quarters.
Although I cut tip a greatquantity of straw for consumption by my animals, still, bwing to thelarge bulk I now grow, I find I cannot get rid of it all in that way. I therefore converted my large barn into a covered yard, and have had therein at various times three lots of bullocks, none of which turned out satisfactorily, either as regarded Coach Factory Outlet Online Sale theanimals or themanure, although they were well littered down with clean straw every day. I suspected that thecause of this was theheating of themanure under them, which became so intensely hot, although moist, that, on removing theupper layer, volumes of steam would rise to thetop of thebarn. One week was sufficient to render it as Coach Diaper Bags hot as a cucumber bed, and in five or six weeks thedung became " Coach Outlet Online fire fanged" and Coach Factory Store undecomposed. Knowing how many Coach Diaper Bags Outlet covered yards succeed, and having observed thedung from these removed iu a rich, cool," spitting"condition, and knowiug too how discrepant have been thevarious results of box and under-cover feeding, I instituted inquiriesinto thecause, and received Coach Online Outlet from one whom I consider thefather of covered yards a most lucid explanation.I had for many years seen in thecovered homestalls of theRev. Mr. Cooke, of Semer, near Coach Factory Outlet Hadleigh, many fine beasts in perfect health and condition, on manure from two to four feet thick. To bim, therefore, I applied for explanation and information. " Well," he said, " like yourself, in myearly daya I found my cattle unhealthy, and Coach Factory Outlet Online perceived that thecause was a too liberal supply of straw as litter; theair being thus admitted, set op violent fermentation and theheating process.. I therefore allowed the' pudding' or solid manure to accumulate, scattering by hand very thinly merely as much straw as would make a pasty mortar bed of thick doughy consistence, theresult being theexclusion of air and perfect coolness. It would bebetter to run therisk of theanbmals being somewhat dirty, than

balance in hand carried to next year
Now, in casting an eye across our provinces, how many farmers will befound neglecting to keep such accounts ! How few, indeed, give their farms credit for thewhole of what they annually produce ! At theyear's end they may beable to give you a rough guess how much they have sold, from theweight of their pockets, provided Nature has gifted them with anything like a retentive memory; but beyond this, agricultural statistics are a dead letter to them—a sort of mystical geography they would much rather shun than approach.
But is this state of things such as it should bein 1856 ? Is there not here a wide field of usefulness, which theRoyal Agricultural Society is bound by its charter to occupy and cultivate, and to whose labours every farmer in thekingdom is bound to respond ? It is a subject which has, we believe, been oftener than once Coach Factory Outlet Coach Diaper Bags Outlet discussed before its Councils—one which will doubtless beso again, without any member ever dreaming of infringing its charter, and one which never more loudly invited practical consideration than at thepresent time.
And even this is not all; for every farmer is not only bound to take such a balance at theyear's end, as just stated — which we may technically term his actual balance-sheet—of produce; but he is also bound, no less for his own individual interest than that of his country, to take an approximative balance at harvest, by inspection, or as soon as practicable, in order to enable Coach Factory Outlet Online bim to draw Coach Diaper Bags thenecessary conclusion as to what price should berealized when he Coach Outlet Online goes to market. And this balance-sheet ought to besimilar to theother, being engrossed in his books in thesame form, so that he Coach Factory could fill up theschedule of thestatistical department of Government when called upon to do so, profiting by bis actual balance as a guide.
We have obviously here, again, another field which theRoyal Agricultural Society is bound to enter upon immediately ; for it cannot, as a politic body, lose sight of the£s. d. view of theproduce of theBritish soil. In theUnited States of America, and several States of Europe, agriculturalstatistics " lead to practical benefit in thecultivation of thesoil;" and therefore, according to thetecondobject of thesociety, they ought to bereduced to practice in England, with its hearty cooperation.
Such is but a very condensed review of this comprehensive subject. It is sufficient, we hope, however, to show that theCouncil of theRoyal Agricultural Society of England would bejustified in Coach Factory Outlet Online Sale appointing a Coach Factory Store statistical committee, to control this important branch of rural affairs.
